Today, the 18000TEU Ultra-large Container Ship, named after “Zheng He”, the ancient Chinese great voyager, is delivered in SCH to her owner CSSC SHIPPING, which was charted by CMA-CGM, one of the three largest liner companies in international Shipping Industry. This is the second 18000TEU Ultra-large Container Ship subsequent to her sister vessel M/V CMA CGM VASCO DA GAMA, which was delivered by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd(SWS) earlier on July 27. The delivery of M/V CMA CGM VASCO DA GAMA enabled China to break the monopoly of South Korea in this field and marked that China Shipbuilding Industry entered into the first camp on development, design and construction of the global ultra-large container ship at the first try, and successfully ascended into the global ultra-large container ship builders’ club. It also marked that Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry had already obtained the capability of constructing and delivering the global ultra-large container ships in succession.
"M/V CMA CGM ZHENG HE" is the world’s seventh generation of container ships. It was constructed in Shanghai Jiangnan-Changxing Heavy Industry Co., Ltd (SCH)-a holding company of SWS. The vessel was designed by Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC), financially supported by China Exim Bank and honored to be the Big Mac among container ships. Beside of above, it also sets below several new records in China Shipbuilding Field.
First: It is so far the longest ship built in China on hull. The overall length is 399.9m and 70m longer than American Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
Second: It is so far the container ship with maximum loading capacity in China. This ship can load 18000 pcs of Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) at the most. It is 108km long when these containers are connected end to end and 47km high when stacked up one by one.
Third: Its deck area is the biggest so far among the merchant ships built in China. The molded breadth is 54m and its deck area is equivalent to four standard football grounds.
Fourth: It has the highest headroom so far among the ships built in China. Its molded depth is 30.2m, accommodation 38 meters high, the headroom from bottom to wheelhouse 65 meters high, which is as high as 22 floors of building. Its design draft is 14.5m, service speed rate 22.2 knots, input steel about 48k tons, and it was classified into BV Class Society.
“M/V CMA CGM ZHENG HE” is the 37th container ship as of today delivered by SCH-a holding company to SWS. Founded in 2007, SCH is nowadays one of the China's most powerful large-scale container ship builders. Up to today, it has launched serial types of container ships like 18000TEU/ 9400TEU/ 8530TEU/ 5100TEU/ 4700TEU/ 4600TEU and deserves the name of global construction center of container ships. Besides, SWS and COSCO (H.K.) Shipping Co., Ltd took win-win cooperation again on Sep 9 and officially signed the contract to build three 20000TEU container ships. This will be another significant milestone as the largest ultra-large container ship in China for SWS after successful cultivation of three 18000TEU container ships from CMA CGM, it also paves the way for SWS to promote her serial products like flagship 20000TEU container ship in international market.
This year is the 640th anniversary of the maiden voyage among Seven Voyages to The Western Seas by Chinese Great Voyager Zheng He. Time flies and days go by! Over the 600 years, we Chinese nation has been following Zheng He’s footprint, neither giving in nor giving up, weaving the dream of building the country into a great shipbuilding, shipping and maritime power,
The shipbuilding and shipping have prevailed in China for more than 3000 years. In ancient China, the shipbuilding technology once rivaled the best in the world. The wooden board boat has been made since Yin and Shang Dynasty, Countries like Wu, Yue, Qi and Chu had already established their fleet armies in Spring and Autumn Period and many kinds of warships were made then as well. The ships gradually developed into large in size since Sui and Tang Dynasty by virtue of the opening of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and unprecedented development of water transportation. The Chinese shipbuilding industry was once dominating in the world in North and South Song Dynasty in ship sizes, types, performance, warship’s armament and navigation skills, In Ming Dynasty, the scale of Chinese wooden sailing-boats manufacture and its production capacity grew rapidly, the unprecedented achievement of fleets to the Western Seas lead by Zheng He was reached and the maritime silk road developed into its peak as well.
Nowadays, with the untiring efforts of several generations of Chinese shipbuilders, China's Shipbuilding industry has made remarkable achievements, many breakthroughs in the world's advanced shipbuilding technology have been continuously made, and both the CGT and number of holding orders rank the top list in the world.
For example, “Hai Yang Shi You 981”, the world's sixth generation of 3000m Deepwater Semi-Submersible Drilling Unit built in SWS of CSSC, commands the South China Sea and amazes the world; the 830K CBM Very Large Gas Carrier(VLGC)built in SCH breaks the technology blockade and long-term monopoly of Japan and South Korea in this field.
At present, the “One Belt One Road” and “Maritime Silk Road”, advocated by our government, open up a new development path for China Shipbuilding Industry, usher in new opportunities and form a new driving force for development.
Today, "MV CMA CGM ZHENG HE" will carry the Chinese dream of building the country into a great shipbuilding, shipping and maritime power, ride the wind and waves, retrace the route to the Western Seas and compose new cantos along with the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”.
