Founded in 1999, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (hereinafter to be named as “SWS”) is a subsidiary of China CSSC Holding Ltd., a publicly listed company controlled by China State Shipbuilding Corporation limited (CSSC). Until now, SWS has been one of the most large-scale, modernized, professional and influential shipbuilding enterprises in the industry.

The main business scope of SWS covers the design and manufacture of merchant vessels, offshore products, marine equipment, etc. SWS has outstanding design and construction capability in the fields of marine and offshore products like Large Cruise Ship, Capsize Bulk Carrier, Medium and Large Oil Tanker, Medium and Large Container Vessel, Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC), Very Large Gas Carrier(VLGC), Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), Semi-submersible and Jack-up Drilling Rig, platform supply vessel (PSV)etc. 

In the field of large cruise ships, as a significant project of CSSC to implement the important instructions of President Xi Jinping, fulfill national strategies, and promote high-quality development, the China’s first domestically built large cruise ship, the Adora Magic City, designed and built by SWS, was successfully named and delivered on November 4, 2023. This marks a milestone in China's transformation from a major shipbuilding country to a global shipbuilding powerhouse. The second domestically -built large cruise ship was floated on April 28, 2025, signifying new technological breakthroughs in China's capacity to construct such vessel.

Regarding merchant vessels, "SWS Bulk Carriers," "SWS Oil Tankers," and "SWS Container Vessels" have become China's leading ship export brands with commanding domestic construction number and international market share. SWS has delivered over 330 Capesize bulk carriers, accounting for 16.7% of the global fleet, ranking first globally. It also successfully delivered the world's first LNG dual-fuel Newcastlemax bulk carrier. In addition, SWS has built and delivered a batch of the world's largest second-generation 400K DWT Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs), becoming the first shipyard globally to construct intelligent VLOC (iVLOC). The company secures top position in the global niche market for 7,000 TEU container vessels. It has signed multiple orders with leading liner companies for 9,200 TEU, 11,000 TEU, and 14,000 TEU container vessels, featuring various clean fuels such as LNG and methanol (ready). This further solidifies its leading position in the medium and large container vessel market. Simultaneously, the company's holding order for Aframax oil tankers accounts for over 17% of the global market share, making it the leader in this segment. SWS has also secured 16 orders for 8,600 CEU, 9,000 CEU, and 10,800 CEU PCTCs, significantly enhancing its international influence in this sector. Additionally, SWS has delivered a range of benchmark products, including 300K DWT Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), 158K DWT Suezmax oil tankers, 109K DWT Arctic Aframax oil tankers, and 18K TEU and 20K TEU ultra-large container vessels.

In the offshore products sector, SWS consistently provides comprehensive and systematic offshore equipment solutions. Key products that have been constructed and delivered include: FPSO vessel with a storage capacity of 2 million/2.3 million barrels, 3,000-meter deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig, Jack up rig with type of JU2000E, CJ46 and CJ50, and PX121H PSV. Additionally, SWS has developed and reserved the latest generation SJ400 jack-up drilling platform rig and offshore wind-hydrogen platform technology.

By August 2025, SWS had delivered a total of 600 various merchant vessels and offshore products, exceeding 100 million DWT, continuously leading the development trend of global marine and offshore industry.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and Offshore Co., Ltd (SWS Offshore) was founded in 2007, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.(SWS). SWS Offshore is located in West Port Area of Shanghai Lingang Heavy Equipment Base with the coastline of 1,131 meters, the planning area of 103.53 hectares, the total construction area of 28.05 hectares, and the added construction area of 16.6786 hectares, of which the estimated total investment is 3.08763 billion yuan.

The investment for the first phase of construction is about 2 billion yuan for constructing the production facilities including Manufacturing Workshops, Floating Structures Workshops, Painting Workshops, Painting Yards, Block Turning-over Yards, and Quays. The supporting facilities include the 35KV Decompression Station and Compressor Station, the administrative facilities including Painting Auxiliary Building, the Procurement Auxiliary Building, and the Platform Structure Auxiliary Building. The second phase construction includes the major production facilities such as one quay for material and working ship, Module Structure Welding Workshop, Spud Leg Assembling Workshop, Living Quarter Assembling Area, Module Area, Pre-outfitting Area, Spud Leg Prefabricated Area, and Offshore Product General Assembling Area. The supporting facilities include such as Collecting and Distributing Center and Warehouses, and Equipment Yards, and the administrative facilities such as Assembling Auxiliary Building and Office Building. The major facilities include the steel pretreatment lines, NC plasma cutting machines, frame bender machines, profile cutting lines, 1200-ton frame cranes, 600-ton gantry cranes, 300-ton gantry cranes, hydraulic machines, winding machines, coating equipment, flatbed trucks, workshop cranes and welding machines etc.

In 2012, in order to improve the supporting facilities for constructing, assembling and transporting offshore products, SWS Offshore started to construct the assembly platform and terminal basin. On the assembly platform, all assembling operations for the offshore products including jack-up drilling rigs, semi-submersible drilling rigs and modules before launching can be operated.

Taking the offshore products as the main business target, the company is able to construct the PSVs, OSVs, offshore modules, living quarters, as well as the special steel structures. So far, the company has undertaken several offshore projects including the jackcases of JU2000E jack-up drilling rig, spud legs, PSVs, etc.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd (SWS Engineering) was founded in 2002. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd (SWS) holds its 71.92% shares.

The designed products include 175,000 DWT Capesize Bulk Carrier, 177,000 DWT Capesize Bulk Carrier, 176,000 DWT Capesize Bulk Carrier, 206,000 DWT Capesize Bulk Carrier, 230,000 DWT Ultra-large Bulk Carrier, 4300 TEU Container Ship, 105,000 DWT Aframax Crude Oil Tanker, 108,000 DWT Aframax Product/Crude Oil Tanker, 319,000 DWT VLCC, 297,000 DWT VLCC, 300,000 DWT FPSO, Jack-up Drilling Rig, and 3000-meter Semi-submersible Drilling Rig, etc. 

SWS Engineering owns 760 personnel including 450 engineers for production design, 185 engineers for offshore design, 80 R&D personnel and 45 management staff. The design software includes NAPA, TRIBON M3, NAPA Steel, MSC Patran and Nastran, SEM and DASIS.
