The first VLGC of China was Born in SCH

On November 19th 2014, the naming ceremony for the first three 83K VLGCs that were researched, designed and built by China was held in CSSC ShanghaiChangxing shipbuilding base, representing China’s shipbuilding industry successfully ranking in the world’s VLGC top group of designing and constructing, breaking the technical blockage and years of monopoly by Japanese and Korean shipyards. It is monumental for restructuring and transformation for Chinese shipbuilding industry. The eye-catching 83K VLGC is built by Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry Co.,Ltd owned by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company and developed and designed by Jiangnan Shipbuilding Group. It is known that eight VLGCs are under construction. 83K VLGC has a length of 226m, a breadth of 36.6m, depth of 22.2m, designed draft 11.4m. It is equipped with 4 independent rhombic IMOA-type self-supporting cargo tanks with total volume of 83 thousand cubic meters, designed temperature of -50 and pressure of 0.25bar. With two sets of general pipes, i.e. liquid and gas pipes, it allows two different types of cargos loading or unloading at the same time. 83K VLGC is classed by LR, and it meets the newest environmental need. Its comprehensive performance is slightly better than the same level product made by Korea. VLGC is the abbreviation of Very Largo Gas Carrier. With the biggest capacity in LPG family, VLGC is capable of containing multiple kind of liquefied oil gas under the temperature of -50 degree. It is widely recognized in the shipbuilding world as a complicated type which is dangerous and hard to design and build. Mr. Hu Keyi, member of the CPPCC National Committee and SCH Chief Technical Officer, said that VLGC is the major ship type for LPG long-distance transportation. The market for VLGC orders is further enlarged because the dehydrogenation of propane has replaced naphtha in polymer chemical industry due to rising oil prices and USA is increasing its exporting shale gas to other countries. He said that the difficulties of VLGC mainly concentrated on overall balance of liquid tank and hull, calculation and release of hull structure temperature field, low-temperature steel welding, liquid tank structure and support system design, and the liquid cargo system and so on. In our country, at present no enterprise is capable of research, design and construction except CSSC. VLGC is completely self-developed and researched by CSSC. With the persistent heating of shale gas exploration, VLGC has become the trend of LPG market for now and the future. For a long time, Chinese shipbuilding enterprises could do nothing about the juicy market of VLGC because of technical blockage and monopoly by Japanese and Korean shipyards. With the policy of "innovation driven, appropriate diversity, structural adjustment, transformation and development", CSSC gives full play of its integrated advantage of research and development combining with persistent following-up international shipping market and acute observation of liquid gas exploration and transportation, finally, after multi-party coordination and 10 years hardworking, we successfully developed VLGC with the international advanced level, reasonable layout and excellent performance, filling a domestic blank. At the same time, we have gained knowledge of the key links of VLGC construction technology, such as the temperature field calculation, hull structure design software, the overall structure finite element calculation of liquefied gas tanks and tank support, tank support design, supporting technology of VLGC cargo system, liquid tank construction workmanship, low temperature steel welding, liquid tank test . In May 2012, SCH signed the first contract of four 83K VLGCs with Seaktanker Group under the umbrella Norway Frontline Company, and in the next year they signed another contract with 4 more orders. With 8 orders, SCH has become the first Chinese enterprise ever to construct VLGC, breaking the monopoly of Korean and Japanese shipyards. Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company is devoted to make Changxing Heavy Industry into a VLGC constructing center in the world. Recently, on the basis of 83K VLGC the company have successfully developed a more environmental and marketable type of ship—85K VLGC, who isdetermined to remain leading in the world on VLGC designing and construction and become more competitive in VLGC market.
